Statement

"nonbinary" is a contemplation on freedom within rigid structures. The word nonbinary was translated into binary code (0/1 language of digital space) and cross-stitched with silk thread on industrial metal screen to demonstrate the idea of ability for natural elements to find a way of expression through any man-made barriers. Cross-stitch was chosen as a feminine element and traditional craft of personalization. Industrial screen was chosen as a masculine element and for it's use as a filter between internal and external spaces both allowing for and limiting access between worlds. As we move culturally in understanding that things are rarely simplified in black & white, this work is presented in grey-scale to consider the nuance available in human experiences.
